This Annual Report takes a look at the 2018 activities under the banner of ADEM.
ADEM stands for Advanced Dutch Energy Materials.
In ADEM, ECN; Energy Research Center of the Netherlands, now part of TNO, the Technical University of Delft, the Eindhoven University of Technology, and the University of Twente joined forces in a collective research and investment program. This research and investment program received a grant of 30 M€ from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. Participating companies together committed an additional support worth over 5 M€.
The Netherlands has an excellent track record in materials research, particularly in (nano-) materials for use in a broad range of energy conversion devices; which encompasses electricity generation and storage (wind, solar cells, batteries), heat transfer and storage, (solar-powered) chemical conversion, etc.
ADEM followed this path in innovative materials research from 2009 with a total of 45 PhD students and 5 Postdocs recruited. From this group, 7 students left their PhD student position early, 29 students received their PhD degree (1 in 2013, 4 in 2014, 10 in 2015, 4 in 2016, 6 in 2017, 3 in 2018, and 1 in 2019), and another 9 promotions are to be expected at the end of 2019.
In line with ADEM’s objective to actively explore the innovation and utilization possibilities of its research ADEM launched a Call for Proposals in 2018. Based on what has been achieved previously in ADEM research, these Innovation and Utilization Proposals address a possible innovation trajectory, intended aim and steps to be taken. A granted research proposal has to be completed by the end of 2019.
This Annual presents an overview of all ongoing ADEM PhD and Post Doc projects, of the first granted Innovation and Utilization Projects, and an overview of the realized and current investments in the joint research infrastructure, up to the end of the year 2018.
The ADEM program will be fully completed per December 31, 2019. The last ADEM Annual Report will be presented in first quarter 2020 and will include a detailed overview of 10 years ADEM-Innovation lab. Earlier reports can be found at https://publications.adem-innovationlab.nl.
